RIS is the first ever activity and theme based school in Uttara, offering pre-school to A Level classes of an international standard. It offers a complete school- leaving course using English as the medium of instruction. We emphasize equal proficiency in Bangla as a necessary prerequisite for a well-rounded education for Bangladeshi students.
RIS’s theme-based education is a perfect fit for small and multi-age classes. Teachers are able to assess the students’ learning through a multitude of tools such as mind maps, tech projects, exploration of writing genres and experiments which form a dynamic portfolio around the theme being studied.
RIS also uses different teaching strategies such as the circle of knowledge, compare and contrast, reading for meaning, learning for writing and inductive learning, teachers create opportunities for the Common Core Standards to be met in an organic way while encouraging critical thinking, deep reflections and hands on activities that back up students’’ hypothesis and predictions.
In the junior school, we encourage children to learn by doing and observe their surroundings, think independently, ask questions and freely express themselves without fear or inhibition, thereby honing their observation, listening, verbal and comprehension skills. We create an environment where students develop independence and creativity.
Students develop a love of learning through hands-on activities where they are given choice. They then grow in confidence as they apply learned skills in different contexts. They conduct diverse activities to develop a range of important skills – communication skills, social skills, personal and emotional skills as well. Students get opportunities for physical education on a regular basis, as well as the creative arts and crafts.
Our curriculum at this stage exposes students to more subjects in a formal classroom setting. The curriculum focuses on developing numeracy, literacy and an understanding of the environment and our surroundings. Learning in these classes is designed to develop positive attitudes.
Students learn not only from their texts but also from their surroundings. We encourage the students to open their eyes, to look around and acquire knowledge from their friends, their teachers and elders, and their environment. Students build key skills and explore concepts in language (both English and Bangla), Maths, Science, Ethics and Religions, Art and Physical Education. Our students start studying Computing Studies from Class I in order to become comfortable with technology gradually, which they will start to use in their academics in subsequent years. When they enter Class IV, they also start to study Social Studies – History, Geography and Bangladesh Studies.
As the students get older, our curriculum is designed to strengthen their foundation and begin their preparation for the public examinations they will take in high school. From Class VI, they start to study the sciences as individual subjects (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) and take lab classes to develop their practical scientific skills. Economics is another subject that is introduced to them in Class VIII.
RIS’s O’ Level program encourages students to engage, invent, manage and compete- equipping them for eventual success in the public examinations under Cambridge International Examinations and Edexcel. Years of experience teaching the O’ Levels has allowed us to understand the needs of the international examinations board – our mock results very closely mirror the actual results of our students.
The A’ Level Program provides a demanding, expansive educational experience to a select group of diverse, talented and intellectually sophisticated students. Through this program we aim to prepare our students for entry to the great universities of the world! Our excellent and experienced A’ Level faculty ensure that our students are given the best guidance for success at the A’ Level examinations.
Assessments in RIS are based on ongoing coursework: written and oral work, class evaluation, monthly evaluation and assignments in each quarter. Performance in sports and co-curricular activities is also assessed regularly. Academic Progress Reports are given every month to analyze subject wise progress. Report Cards are given two times a year, upon completion of each term.
There is no examination for the junior classes, up to Class III. Learning at this level is more closely linked to the developmental process- physical, emotional, social and intellectual. However, from Class IV onwards formal written examinations are taken at the end of each term.
The academic year begins in July and ends in June. Classes commence in July or August after the Orientation Week is completed.
The school year is divided into four quarters, i.e. two terms. The First Term begins in July (after the summer vacation) and the Second Term begins in January (after the winter vacation).Winter Break, Summer Break and the two Eid breaks are the main scheduled vacations during the academic year.
The dates of all the school vacations and other important dates are given in the Annual School Calendar. In addition, parents can download the calendar by logging in student’s login section of our website. Click here to access those documents.
